Sabasi classroom block at advanced stage
THE construction of a classroom block at Sabasi Primary School in Bulilima District in Matabeleland South province, which was initiated through advocacy by First Lady Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, is now 80 percent complete.
The first phase of the project comprises a classroom block, a teachers’ cottage, and toilets. Last week, the builders installed ring beams at the structure and now await the laying of a few brick courses before roofing is done.
The project is expected to enhance access to education to previously marginalized communities courtesy of the push by Amai Mnangagwa, which prompted the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to source funding from the Treasury for the first phase of the construction project to take off at an initial cost of about US$55 000.
In an interview, Matabeleland South provincial education director, Mrs Beatrice Manjere, said construction is going on smoothly.
“The construction of a school by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Sabasi village in Bulilima District is going on well and the building material cost US$53 319.11, which are funds from the Treasury,” she said.
“This is to cover the first phase, which is the construction of a classroom block, a teachers’ house, and toilets. This is the only new school under construction in the province through Treasury funds.”
The villagers have warmly welcomed the development and are offering labour where they are assisting officials from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services in building works.
Bulilima legislators Cde Dingumuzi Phuti and the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Evelyn Ndlovu, have also played a critical role in ensuring the success story for the Sabasi community.
The establishment of Sabasi Primary
School is set to help reduce walking distances for the learners who were walking more than seven kilometres to Makhulela Primary School and 13km to Zenzele Secondary School in Ndolwane, a situation that has led to school dropouts.
The school is part of projects being implemented by the Second Republic as it continues to uplift the San community in line with inclusivity and development that leaves no one and no place behind.
By recognizing the unique challenges faced by the historically marginalised group and implementing targeted initiatives, the Government is working to bridge the gap and create opportunities for the San community.
