World stops producing legends

- MAHACHI KASUSU, Kitwe.

Dear Editor,

IT is sad to note that for whatever reasons, the world has run out of legends in all areas of human endeavour.

I almost thought Climate Change narrative was the only gumption behind this dejected scenario.

Take the world of boxing when names like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazer were always on the lips of people. Today, there is total silence and this truly jangles our nerves.

Yes, in Zambia, we often talked about boxing legends like Lottie Gunduzani Mwale, Chisanda Mutti, and Felix Njilamanda but today, it is the same drought.

In the area of big screen acting, Hollywood too has lost its fascination in producing the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Terminator; Sylvester Stallone, Rambo: Jeanvan Claude, Chuck Norris, Denzel Washington, Charles Bronson, James Bond 007, it’s the usual drought.

In music, legends in the size of Michael Jackson, James Brown, Jim Reeves, Beatles, Abba, Queen, Tina Turner, Don Williams, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, Dean Martin and many others still linger in our minds today.

Locally however, we still remember the Witch, Paul Ngozi of the Ngozi Family, Smokey Haangala, P.K. Chishala, Jane Osborne, Emmanuel Mulemena are some still keeping our fond memories.

The same is true in the world of wrestling which produced names like John Cena, Big Daddy, the Undertaker, Sean Michael and indeed many others we can still recall.

Again, in Zambia names like John Mwale, Freddie Joe, Willie Nkandu still linger at the back of our minds. i don’t know if wrestling is still a sport in Zambia today tho ugh.

Is it any wonder that today in Zambia, legends are being made in the form of junkies, adulterous bishops, divorces, murderers, alcoholics, witchcraft and life goes on?

The legends of yesteryears were the usual instigative, intrepid and a marvel to watch and listen to. It beats me to imagine how the world would be like without legends but I can only prognosticate a dull world.

These world legends, some mentioned here, were truly the entertainment salt of our planet Earth. Probably only God knows why this is so but I can safely claim we are into deep water.
