Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun
• Thumbs up to San Luis’ Dr. Prakshep Bhatt, who recently won the Best Screenplay award for his creative debut, “Path of Vindication” at the Chandler International Film Festival. Congrats!
• Thumbs up to the Gethsemani Food Ministry, which has found a way to resume partial operations of its food distributions in San Luis, Ariz. Hunger is a serious issue in Yuma County, and every ounce of food helps.
• Thumbs up to US World War II veteran Harold Terens, 100, and Jeanne Swerlin, 96, who recently tied the knot on the beaches of Normandy, France. Their collective age is nearly 200 – but as they showed, love knows no age limits! We love this sweet story – and wish this Florida couple the best!
• Thumbs up to the amazing Yumans who recently volunteered their time to clean up the confluence of the Gila and Colorado Rivers. This area is a hot spot for people to jump in the river and cool off – but too often, they leave lots of trash behind. We appreciate the efforts of the 928Flathead Boyz, Arizona Game and Fish, Yuma County Development Services, Yuma County Public Works, Arizona@work and the Yuma County Adult Probation Office in cleaning it up.
• Thumbs down to the heat across the desert southwest this week. Is this June or August? It’s hard to tell right now! Please, Mother Nature – turn down the thermostat just a bit!
• Thumbs down to people who leave the scene of an accident. We find ourselves shaking our heads every time the Yuma Police Department posts a message to help identify a vehicle from a hit and run. People, there are cameras everywhere these days – do you really think no one will see you or report you? Do the smart thing – stick around and take responsibility. After all, the consequences for leaving are much worse.
Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
