BCN Bison boys win 54-41 over Richland

Barnes County North used a 12-2 run in the first half to break open a close game on the way to a 54-41 win over Richland on the quarterfin­als of the Division B, District 1 boys basketball tournament at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the campus of Valley City State University.

The first quarter had five lead changes and one tie, all coming on six straight baskets, in the first 6:09 of the game. Oliver Hanson score the Bison’s first six points while Nicholas Mjoness scored four of the first six points for Richland.

Richland had the twice in the first quarter at 3-2 and 5-4 only to see Hanson score on both occasions to give BCN the lead back. A free throw by Mjoness tied the game at 6 with 1:51 to go in the quarter. That is when the Bison went on their 12-2 run. A basket inside by Will Schwehr gave the Bison a 8-6 lead with 1:38 to go in the quarter. It would be a lead they would not give up.

Baskets by Parker Amann and Jayson Schlenker gave Barnes County North a 12-8 lead after one quarter.

The Bison would score the first six points of the second quarter on a three-pointer by Jonah Harstad and a three point play by Justin Schlenker, to take a 18-8 lead with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter.

Richland cut the lead down to six over the next 93 seconds. Mjoness putback his own miss and Levi Ulven scored on a turnaround hook to make 18-12 with 4:25 to go in the half.

The Bison would then go on a 7-0 run over the next 3:45 to take a 13 point lead. A turnaround, fadeaway jumper gave by Amann made it 25-12 Bison with 39.1 seconds to go. After the two teams exchanged baskets, the score was 27-15 Barnes County North at halftime.

The two teams would alternate scoring the entire third quarter. An inside basket by Casyn Syvertsen would get the lead down to seven 38-31 with 1:09 to go in the third quarter. But Hanson would score the next four points for the Bison, making it 42-31 after the third quarter.

The lead was between eight and 15 points the rest of the game. Amann’s free throw with 35.2 seconds remaining gave the Bison a 54-39 lead, their biggest of the game.

Oliver Hanson led the Bison with 16 points. Jonah Harstad score 13 points before fouling out. Parker Amann came off the bench to score seven points and grab four rebounds. Will Schwehr scored six points and had a team high six rebounds. Justin Schlenker and Jayson Schlenker scored five points each. Justin Also had a game high five assists and two steals. Chance Roaldson finished with two points.
