Maple River Girls Basketball goes 2-1

The Maple River Raiders girls basketball team wrapped up a busy few days playing three games in four days and going 2-1 in the those three games.

Maple River beat Hillsboro-Central Valley 61-40, lost to May-Port CG 63-40 and defeated Griggs-Midkota 49-33

Maple River 61, Hillsboro-Central Valley 40

The Raiders took control of the game with a 15-0 run from the 1:42 mark in the first quarter to 4:03 mark of the second quarter. A three-pointer by Megan Ensign was the first field goal for the Burros in 5:39. Maple River led 29-15 at halftime.

The Raiders opened up a 22 point lead with a 13-5 start to the third quarter. A free throw by Hannig made it 42-20 Raiders with 5:30 to go in the fourth quarter. Maple River led 48-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Abigail Killoran capped a 13-3 run for the Raiders to open up a 28 point lead 61-33. They were the final points Maple River would score in the game.

BriElle Killoran and Adyson Hannig led the Raiders with 14 points each. Killoran added seven rebounds, Hannig had four. Carly Hovelson had ten points and three assists, Violet Richman had nine points and three steals, Abigail Killoran had five points, Hallie Besette had a three-pointer while Iris Richman, Stella Satrom and Jada Von Bank all had two points. Richman and Kiana Lerud each had five assists. May-Port CG 63, Maple River 40 May-Port CG broke open a close game by going on a 19-5 run in a span of 5:42 between the first and second quarter on the way to a 23 point win over the Raiders in Mayville.

Adyson Hannig completed a threepoint play to give the Raiders a 7-6 lead with 4:38 to go in the first quarter, that would be the last lead for Maple River. The Patriots ended the quarter on a 12-5 run then scored the first seven points of the second quarter to open up a 25-12 lead. The Raiders went 6:04 with a field goal before Violet Richman hit a threepoint­er with 3:24 to go on the second quarter to cut the Patriot lead to 2716.

May-Port CG would open the fourth quarter on a 12-0 to lead 5727 with 5:44 to go in the quarter to institute the running clock.

“The physicalit­y and speed that the Patriots played with definitely caused us to struggle. Thirty turnovers is a season high and something that cannot happen again if we plan to have success in the postseason this year.”

Violet Richman and Adyson Hannig each had nine points to lead the Raiders. Richman added three steals and three assists, Hannig had nine rebounds. BriElle Killoran had seven points and two steals. Kiana Lerud had six points, Claire Ihry had three points and six rebounds, Iris Richman, Carly Hovelson and Abigail Killoran all had two points. Richman had seven rebounds while Hovelson had five and four assists.

Maple River 49, Griggs County-Midkota 33

Maple River used a 19-6 run in a span of about seven minutes in the first half to break open a two point game on the way to a 49-33 win over the Cougars in Cooperstow­n.

The Raiders biggest lead was 21 points thanks to a 10-0 start to the second half. A short jumper by Kiana Lerud made it 39-18 Raiders with 5:10 to go in the third quarter. The lead stayed between 15 and 21 points the rest of the game.

Violet Richman led Maple River with 16 points. Adyson Hannig scored 13, BriElle Killoran had nine, Carly Hovelson had four, Kiana Lerud, Abigail Killoran, and Claire Ihry each had two and Aliyah Hannig chipped in a free throw.
