Blast into space or the mountains with these September film events in Wichita

September is well underway, but the month still holds several local film events that include sci-fi, comedy and mystery flicks from the past.

Here’s a look at what’s coming.

Anniversar­y Film Series: “Galaxy Quest” (1999)

It’s hard to believe it’s the 25th anniversar­y of one of my favorite comedies. It follows the alumni cast of a space opera television series who have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help. But they also have to defend Earth and the alien race from a reptilian warlord. Never give up! Never surrender!

Showing: 7 p.m. Sept. 19. Tickets: $8, $7 for students, seniors and military.

Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour

This traveling film festival will present movies spotlighti­ng outdoor storytelli­ng and filmmaking from more than 40 countries. The films explore remote vistas, analyze topical environmen­tal issues, and bring audiences up close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports and more. This stop on the tour is hosted by Rendezvous Adventure Outfitters.

Take 36 Top 10 Showcase

This is the concluding event of the Tallgrass Film Associatio­n’s Take 36 film race, where creatives are tasked with conceiving, developing, writing, shooting and editing a short film made in just 36 hours. It showcases the top 10 films as voted on by Tallgrass programmer­s. There will also be an audience award winner announced. So rest up!

“The Autopsy of Jane

Doe” (2016)

Father and son coroners receive a mysterious unidentifi­ed corpse with no apparent cause of death. As they attempt to examine the “Jane Doe,” they discover increasing­ly bizarre clues that hold the key to her terrifying secrets. Presented by Madame Mae’s Horror Frights.

Showing: 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Tickets: $15 plus taxes and fees.

“Demons” (1985)

A group of random people are invited to a screening of a mysterious movie, only to find themselves trapped in the theater with ravenous demons. That’s what you get for a matinee price! Ha. Presented by the Gate Record Store.

“When Nietzsche Wept” (2007)

Viennese doctor Josef Bruer meets with philosophe­r Friedrich Nietzsche to help him deal with his despair.

“Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill”

This documentar­y tells the story of folk-rock icon Judee Sill, who in just two years went from living in a car to appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone. The film charts her troubled adolescenc­e through her meteoric rise in the music world and her tragic early death. Presented by Spektrum Muzik.

20. Tickets: $10 plus taxes and fees.

“CatVideoFe­st 2024” This is a compilatio­n reel of the latest fun cat videos culled from the Internet and more. Tallgrass is partnering with Save the Kitties, a Derby non-profit that rescues, rehabilita­tes and rehomes cats. Ten percent of ticket proceeds will go to the organizati­on.
