Pilgrims fall to Columbia City in Saturday matinee

PLYMOUTH — It was one of those games that you walk away from and never speak of again as Plymouth dropped a Saturday game with Columbia City by an 11-1 score.

“We just couldn’t find it,” said Plymouth head coach Ryan Wolfe. “You have those days. A couple of free bases early and nothing really went right.”

The Eagles plated two in the first almost before anybody had settled in their seats as Columbia City lead-off man Lukas Getts started his nearly perfect day with his first of three hits and a stolen base and it went downhill from there. Getts would end the day 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and a pair of RBIS.

Right behind him in the order, Trey Deckman was maybe even better with a 4-for-4 day with a pair of doubles and his first scored Getts to start the game.

Columbia City would plate two right away in the first and in the end that would be all they would need. They would add three more in the fourth off of Malachi Sieh in relief of starter Nick Manzuk, three more in the fifth off of reliever Aiden Landis, and their final run in the seventh off of reliever Kaden Milliser.

“I don’t think that we showed up today. We really didn’t,” said Wolfe. “Maybe the long week, playing on a Saturday and it’s hot out. It’s hot for them too. I don’t know what the case was but we just didn’t come out ready to play.”

Meanwhile, Columbia City starter Kash Uher was also nearly perfect in his third appearance of the year. Not overpowering, the crafty lefty had Plymouth hitters chasing him around the strike zone all day, and while he only struck out five, he only walked one hitter — that in the seventh inning — and gave up only three hits.

“We hit a few balls hard,” said Wolfe. “Nonetheless we had a lot of pop-ups to the right side, not staying on it. We have to understand what those types of pitchers are trying to do to us and we just didn’t make a whole lot of adjustments as the game went on.”

Freshman Ben Shively, Parker Wolfe, and Tre Jordan had the only Plymouth hits and Jordan the only RBI.

Kaden Milliser in relief had another good appearance on the mound giving up three hits in two innings of work and walking just one.

“Kaden was good today,” said Wolfe. “That’s kind of been its

own struggle. We have guys go out and they’re on and then they’re not on. He did a good job coming in and keeping us where we needed to be.”

Plymouth moves to 6-18 on the year and will face Knox today.

“I have to find the right things to say and do to get them ready to go,” said Wolfe of the coming week. “It’s not over and I don’t want it to be over and I hope they don’t want it to be over. We have to find a way to get ready to go.

Hopefully Monday we get a good one under our belts and come out ready to play and prepare for sectionals.”
