Devils score four times in second, beat Blue Jackets

Alexander Holtz, Nico Hischier and Nathan Bastian scored 6:03 apart during New Jersey's four-goal second period, and the Devils beat the host Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Friday night to snap a two-game skid.

John Marino also scored and Vitek Vanecek stopped 28 shots for the Devils.

Cole Sillinger scored for Columbus.

HURRICANES 4, RED WINGS 2 >> Andrei Svechnikov scored on host Carolina's only power play to break a third-period tie for the Hurricanes, who also got goals from Jordan Martinook, Martin Necas and Sebastian Aho. Klim Kostin and J.T. Compher scored for the Red Wings. WILD 6, PANTHERS 4 >> Kirill Kaprizov scored two of Minnesota's five power-play goals and the visiting Wild beat Florida. CAPITALS EXTEND PROTAS FOR FIVE YEARS >> The Washington Capitals have signed forward Aliaksei Protas, 23, to a five-year extension worth $16.875 million, a longterm commitment to a young player the organizati­on believes is on an upward trajectory. General manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal Friday. When the new contract kicks in next season, Protas will count $3.375 million annually against the salary cap through 2028-29. PINTO SIGNS WITH SENATORS >> Shane Pinto signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators on Friday, paving the way for the first modern NHL player suspended for gambling to make his season debut Sunday at Philadelph­ia. Pinto, 23, was banned 41 games in October after an investigat­ion found he violated the league's sports gambling policy. Neither he nor the league would reveal what he did to draw the suspension other than to say Pinto did not bet on hockey.
