INDIANAPOLIS — One cornerback returned to the lineup for the Colts this week, and another is suddenly dealing with injury uncertainty.
JuJu Brents has been back on the practice field after breaking his nose in the second preseason game against the Cardinals. But his primary backup, Dallis Flowers, missed practice Thursday due to a hamstring injury that Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen termed as minor.
Brents wore a red non-contact jersey during the team’s two practices this week for precautionary reasons, but he does not have any concerns about playing in the season opener against the Texans after undergoing precautionary surgery.
“I guess (the doctor) wanted to see all the damage,” Brents said. “They knew it was broken. They didn’t want to set it right then and there; they ended up setting it the next day.”
Brents still can’t believe how he broke his nose. He thought his visor got slammed back into his face. When he went back and watched film of the play, he realized a player’s cleat somehow made it underneath his face mask, leaving a scrape on both sides of his face in addition to the broken nose.
“After I finished the series, I came out and looked in the mirror and my nose was over here, so I could tell there was a good chance it was broken,” Brents said. “But then the swelling kind of settled in, and when I got interviewed after the game, I couldn’t really tell.”
The CT scan confirmed Brents’ first impression.
The good news is his nose already looks much better, and he’s on track to play against Houston.
“Feel good,” Brents said. “Feel great.” Flowers’ availability for the season opener is a little more uncertain, although Shane Steichen seemed optimistic about the third-year cornerback’s status.
“I don’t think (it will keep him out),” Steichen said. “I think he’ll be alright.”
If any of the Indianapolis outside cornerbacks is forced to miss time, the Colts do have options on the practice squad who can be elevated in a pinch.
Indianapolis brought back veteran Ameer Speed, who is also an option on special teams, and fifth-round pick Jaylin Simpson. The Colts also claimed former 49ers cornerback Samuel Womack on waivers and brought back veteran Chris Lammons, but both of those players appear to fit better in the slot than the outside.
