New poll ranks Beshear as most popular Democratic governor

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is the most popular Democratic governor in the country, according to a Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.

According to the poll, 67% of voters surveyed approve of Beshear’s job performance — falling behind only Republican Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, who had an 81% rating.

The poll results come amid speculation over Beshear’s potential as a running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, though it’s unclear whether he’s still considered a contender.

A report from USA TODAY on Tuesday excluded Beshear from a list of Democrats who have been asked to submit vetting materials to Harris’ campaign, though that doesn’t necessarily mean Beshear is out of the running.

Beshear said in an interview on CNN Monday that he had not been “personally asked” to submit vetting materials, though he confirmed he spoke with Harris on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he would no longer seek reelection.

“She called and asked for my support, and I willingly gave it,” Beshear said, adding he wanted to keep the details of their conversation “personal.”

Earlier Monday, Beshear gave his “full endorsement” to Harris as the Democratic nominee on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

“The vice president is smart and strong, which will make her a good president,” Beshear said.

Beshear’s two national media appearances and increased social media attention this week make it seem he’s open to the idea of being a vice presidential candidate, though he has not explicitly said he wants the role.

Others reportedly in consideration for the vice presidential nominee include North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly.
