LMPD detective faces DUI charge

Suspected of causing vehicle crash in Clifton

- Leo Bertucci

A Louisville Metro Police detective faces a DUI charge in connection to a motor vehicle collision early Sunday morning in the Clifton neighborhood.

Sometime after 3 a.m., LMPD officers were in the 2300 block of Frankfort Avenue on a report of a crash in the area, according to the arrest citation for the detective, Kyle Carroll. It was later determined a vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a parked car.

The citation stated officers did not see anyone at the site of the crash until Carroll came out from behind a building, allegedly telling officers there were two people who had left the scene.

Officers determined the statement was false, according to the arrest citation.

Officers reported smelling alcohol from Carroll’s breath and saw that he had “bloodshot glossy eyes.” When asked how much he had to drink that night, Carroll said he had two beers, the arrest citation stated. After conducting multiple sobriety tests, officers suspected Carroll, who is 34, had driven under the influence of alcohol. His blood-alcohol level was reported to be 0.135. Kentucky’s legal limit for adults over the age of 21 is 0.08.

Carroll was taken into police custody about 4:15 a.m. and was later booked into Louisville Metro Corrections.

There were no injuries reported at the scene of the crash and Carroll was off duty when the incident occurred, LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said in a statement.

“LMPD takes this situation very seriously and we are grateful no one was injured,” Ellis said in a statement. “The officer will be placed on administrative leave as we investigate further.”

Carroll has an arraignment hearing scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m. in Jefferson District Court, according to court records.
