By the Beautiful Sea: At Home Down the Shore
The Challenge:
To create a flow in a 5,000square-foot beach house so that all rooms work together in a subtle way.
The Solution:
In order to create a cohesive space in an open concept large home, especially a new build, I like to use one wall color throughout the main areas… we chose Agreeable Gray paint from Sherwin-Williams. It is a soft gray with a beige undertone that exudes warmth and evokes a sandy feel. As it was a beach house, I wanted to bring the outside colors in and ensure that the deć or didn’t compete with the beach view outside. Window treatments are layered with blinds for privacy but soft valances for texture. I also layered lots of tone-on-tone textures and added interest in small and unexpected ways. The beach and sea were a consistent theme; however, I didn’t want it to scream beach, but gently allude to it.
The open concept top floor features ample seating space that will accommodate a large group as well as intimate seating for morning coffee and reading. The furniture is upholstered in soft, textured Crypton fabrics that will hold up against fading, wear-and-tear and stains.
In the living room area, the chairs have a subtle stripe with the colors of the sea and sky woven in and the sofa pillows sport wave-like patterns. The rug also has hints of blue. The coffee table’s finish looks like waving sand dunes.
In the small home office off the main area at the back of the house, I went a little punchier with blue upholstery on the daybed and window seat, a blue-and-red floral valance and pillows with an awning stripe. A coral sculpture from the Phillips Collection decorates the wall.
On the middle level, the flex room acts as a secondary media room and has a darker, more fall-like palette. The nautical theme continues with a bench fashioned out of a surfboard and oars on the wall above. A tripod lamp resembles a sextant. The homeowner’s sepia- toned print is the centerpiece of a long wall and is flanked by sconces finished in aged iron for the added texture.
For a kid’s guestroom on the same level, I had a little fun. A wood slat American flag hangs above the bed and sets the bold color scheme. The iron daybed/trundle bed is dressed in crisp royal blue and white and the rug echoes the palette in a wide blue and white stripe.
The end result? Room by room, the client is pleased with a house that flows together and works perfectly for family and friends in any season.
