BSO: Suspect shot, killed by deputies in Oakland Park following standoff

- By Angie DiMichele

A suspect in a domestic violence incident was shot and killed in Oakland Park by Broward Sheriff ’s deputies Wednesday afternoon during a standoff and “confrontation,” the Sheriff ’s Office said.

The Oakland Park District Crime Suppression Team was searching for the suspect near the 800 block of East Prospect Road shortly before 3 p.m., according to a news release. Deputies found the suspect, and “following a standoff, a confrontation occurred at which time deputies were forced to fire their weapons,” the release said.

Aerial footage from several TV news stations showed a dark-colored SUV with bullet holes in its windshield. Sheriff ’s Office spokesperson Carey Codd said preliminary information indicated the “confrontation” happened outside of a car.

The suspect was wanted for multiple felony domestic-violence-related charges stemming from at least one recent incident, according to Codd.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Further information about the suspect, the domestic incident and the circumstances of the shooting were not released Wednesday night. Codd said he could not provide additional details about the confrontation or say whether the suspect had a gun.

Multiple deputies fired their weapons, he said, and will be on administrative assignment pending an investigation. No deputies were injured, Codd said.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Internal Affairs Unit was at the scene conducting an administrative investigation, Codd said.

In the past week, there have been two other incidents in South Florida where law enforcement shot at suspects.

On Sunday, two BSO deputies shot at suspect Valdemar Milto in Weston after they said he barricaded inside a home and a standoff ensued following a domestic incident in Hollywood. He then attempted to flee in a car and “an armed encounter occurred between the subject and the deputies forcing the deputies to discharge their weapons,” the Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release.

He was taken to a hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds and has since been booked into jail. No one else was injured, the Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release Sunday.

Milto is facing one count of aggravated domestic battery for the incident involving his wife, according to a probable cause affidavit. The affidavit does not contain details about the shooting in Weston. He is also facing three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated fleeing with injury or damage stemming from the incident in Weston, jail records show.

A Sunrise Police officer was attempting to arrest attempted murder suspect Romuliss Hicks in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 2 on an active warrant when he shot the officer in his leg, according to the police department. Officers shot back at Hicks, hitting him. The officer underwent surgery and was expected to recover. Hicks is currently held in the Main Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.

Hicks has not yet been charged in the shooting of the Sunrise officer, court and jail records show. Few details have been released about how the shooting unfolded.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating all three recent shootings.

“Following a standoff, a confrontation occurred, at which time deputies were forced to fire their weapons.”
