Weaver makes change at LBs coach
Changes to the defensive side of the Miami Dolphins’ staff under coach Mike McDaniel and new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver have already begun.
The Dolphins are hiring former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry as linebackers coach and run-game coordinator, according to a league source Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the previous holder of that position, Anthony Campanile, will not return to Miami.
Barry, 53, was not retained in Green Bay after three seasons leading the defense under coach Matt LaFleur. The Packers hired Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator.
Barry also had separate two-year stints as a coordinator in Washington in 2015 and 2016 and Detroit in 2007 and 2008, giving him seven total years of experience at the position.
Leading up to his runs as defensive coordinator, Barry coached linebackers. Before joining the Packers, he was assistant head coach and linebackers coach with the Los Angeles Rams from 2017 to 2020. He also had stints coaching linebackers with the San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including coaching Derrick Brooks and the 2002 Super Bowl-winning Bucs team. And he’s done it at the college level, including at Southern California.
While not having a direct link to time together with either McDaniel or Weaver, Barry has previously worked under LaFleur and Rams coach Sean McVay, who worked with McDaniel in Washington early last decade.
Campanile is out after holding the linebackers coach position since 2020, under two different coaches and defensive coordinators — McDaniel and Brian Flores at the helm and Vic
Fangio and Josh Boyer leading the defenses.
He interviewed for Miami’s defensive coordinator opening this offseason and last, but didn’t get it either time, with Weaver the choice this go-around.
Campanile also interviewed for the New York Giants defensive coordinator position, but that job went to Shane Bowen, the former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator, on Monday.
Campanile’s profile also rose this past season with an impassioned speech and other interactions with Dolphins players highlighted by HBO series “Hard Knocks,” which was given exclusive access to the team during the season.
In addition to other changes McDaniel and Weaver agree on, the Dolphins have an opening at safeties coach, with Joe Kasper leaving over the weekend for the same job with the Philadelphia Eagles under Fangio.
