Local author, Becky Mcree, to hold book signing

The H & W Drugstore on the square in downtown Newton will be the scene of a book signing and sale by local author, Becky McRee, on Friday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. McRee has written a number of books in the past and most recently, a new version of her family cookbook has been published. “I only have a few of these cookbooks remaining but people have really liked them,” she said. The cookbooks contain old-time recipes from McRee’s mother and extended family. “I grew up eating these wonderful casseroles, cakes, pies and more,” she said.

“I also wanted to feature my latest book ‘As the Story Goes - A Small Town Journalist Shares Her Love of Storytelli­ng’ that has been so popular. Since I have worked for five newspapers in the past, I have a wealth of columns about many subjects.” In this book are stories of gardens, flowers, birds, trees, and closer to home, Soldier’s Reunion in Newton, the historic H & W Drug and the old State Theater. There are also a number of stories related to our beautiful North Carolina Mountains,

like Grandfathe­r Mountain and the well-known Linn-Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Another story is of McRee’s living through Hurricane HUGO’s heavy damage in Charlotte.

I will have an interestin­g book about my time living and visiting in Baghdad, Iraq from 1970 to 1989. “From the Catawba to the Tigris” has been well-liked and tells of my adventures there in that ancient land of Mesopotami­a and of times spent with my dear Iraqi family.

“In addition I will have available the book on my Civil War Ancestor, “George Rabb,” and my poetry book, ‘Passages of the Heart.’” A popular book about everything southern, including southern characters, has been well-liked by readers. Titled ‘Southern Potpourri,’ this book relays the stories of McRee growing up in Newton in the simpler days of the 1950s amid marching with the Newton-Conover Band to parades and football games; camp meetings; polio epidemics -- and no air conditioni­ng!
