Berhalter future to be decided next week

Gregg Berhalter’s time as the United States men’s national team coach could be coming to an end.

Fox Sports reported that United States Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker is expected to make a decision on Berhalter’s future by the middle of next week.

This comes following a Copa America in which the United States, hosting the prestigious tournament, couldn’t even make it out of group play despite entering competition ranked No.

11 in the world and

No. 3 among teams competing in the tournament, behind Argentina and Brazil.

That ranking comes with at least some dispute, though.

The United States defeated only Bolivia in group play and lost to Panama and Uruguay, which they needed to beat to have a shot at advancing.

In a statement, Crocker assured that the program would conduct “a comprehensive review of our performance in Copa America and how best to improve the team and results as we look towards the 2026 World Cup.”

He later added, “Our tournament performance fell short of our expectations … We must do better.”

It was the first time since 2016 that the USMNT competed in Copa America. They also hosted that event, but finished in fourth place, tied for their best Copa finish ever.

This also comes a year after flopping at the less prestigious Gold Cup, which is contested between teams in CONCACAF only, excluding South American nations.

The USMNT, which has won six of the last 11 Gold Cups going back to 2002, finished fourth in last year’s edition, tied for their lowest finish since 2000.
