Sevy delivers another strong outing

There are few certainties with the Mets.

But Luis Severino producing a representative effort may be one of them.

He continued his strong debut season in Queens on Thursday, holding the Marlins to one run over six innings in a come-frombehind, 3-2 victory at Citi Field. The former Yankee now has a 2.47 ERA in eight starts in his new home and a 3.12 mark overall, the best of any Mets starting pitcher.

Over his six innings, Severino allowed seven hits. But he did a good job of working around trouble.

“This is one of those days that you have to pitch for contact,” said Severino, who has finished at least six innings in four of his past five starts. “In the offseason, I worked on developing new pitches. If I go out there and my slider isn’t working, I have my sweeper. If my changeup isn’t working, I have my cutter and my sinker. I have more options I can go with if some pitchers are not working.”

The first two Marlins reached in the third inning, but Severino retired the next three to keep them scoreless. In the fourth, he got Tim Anderson to bounce into a double play to escape a bases-loaded threat and stranded two more in the fifth. Jake Burger took him deep in the sixth for Miami’s lone run against the righthander.

“Look, he gave us six and they made him work,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “The life on his fastball was there, 98 mph. I thought he threw some good sinkers to the righties. But I don’t think he had the sweeper-slider, the secondary pitches today. Had a few three-ball counts and they created traffic, but he kept making pitches. … Found a way to give us six and kept us in the game. So, solid.”

That’s a good way to describe Severino’s first season as a Met: solid.
