NHL: Isles’ Lee wins Clancy Trophy

Anders Lee was named the winner of the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Tuesday night, honoring his leadership on the ice and his charitable contributi­ons off it.

Lee, the Islanders’ captain, is heavily involved with the Jam Kancer Foundation. He hosted a Kan Jam event at Northwell Health Ice Center before the season and funds scholarshi­ps through the foundation in memory of his friend Fenov PierreLoui­s, who died of neuroblast­oma in 2018.

Lee has funded 24 scholarshi­ps and is taking applicatio­ns for five more this season. He also hosts families impacted by cancer at every Islanders home game and hosts an annual gifting initiative for them during the holidays.

As part of the award, Lee will receive a $25,000 donation from the NHL to a charity of his choice. He is also eligible to elect that the Islanders receive a $20,000 grant to organize a special activation related to his cause. This is Lee’s first time winning the award. —Ethan Sears

FRENCH OPEN: Novak nets win

Novak Djokovic earned a 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over 33-year-old Frenchman PierreHugu­es Herbert in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday night in Paris.

Djokovic is trying to become the first player in tennis history to claim 25 Grand Slam singles trophies.

The first round closed on a day during which rain delayed play for several hours early in the day on all but the two principal courts, which are outfitted with retractabl­e roofs.

Other winners included the man Djokovic beat in last year’s French Open final,

Casper Ruud, and past major champions Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.

Two-time Australian Open champion Sabalenka overpowere­d Erika Andreeva 6-1, 6-2.

MLB: Cubs beat Brewers in extras

Mike Tauchman hit a go-ahead single in Chicago’s five-run 10th inning and the Cubs stopped a five-game skid by beating the Brewers 6-3 in Milwaukee. Ben Brown struck out a career-high 10 in seven hitless innings for the Cubs.

In San Francisco, Luis Matos hit a walkoff sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to plate automatic runner Tyler Fitzgerald and the Giants beat the MLB-leading Phillies 1-0.

In Minneapoli­s, Simeon Woods Richardson earned his first win in eight starts and the Twins beat the Royals 4-2. Minnesota has won six of its last seven games.

In Arlington, Texas, Corey Seager homered for the seventh time in as many games, putting the Rangers ahead with his three-run shot in their 4-2 win over Arizona in a rematch of last year’s World Series.

In St. Petersburg, Fla., rookie Mitch Spence took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Miguel Andújar hit a three-run homer, and the Athletics beat the Rays 3-0.

ETC.: Clark gets 30 points in loss

Caitlin Clark finished with a seasonbest 30 points, six assists, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals but it was not enough as the Los Angeles Sparks earned a 88-82 victory over the Indiana Fever in Indianapol­is. Kia Nurse scored 22 points and Aari McDonald added a season-high 21 for the Sparks.

The Texans rewarded wide receiver Nico Collins for his breakout performanc­e last season with a three-year, $72.75 million contract extension that includes $52 million guaranteed, according to multiple media reports.
