SOCCER: Red Bulls rout D.C. United

Cameron Harper and Lewis Morgan scored five minutes apart early in the second half and the Red Bulls beat D.C. United 4-1 on Wednesday night in Washington.

New York (6-2-5) became the ninth team in MLS history to score at least nine goals in consecutiv­e road matches against a single club. Elias Manoel opened the scoring with a 35-yard half-volley in first-half stoppage time for the Red Bulls. Substitute Cory Burke added a goal in second-half stoppage time to give a 4-1 lead to the visitors.

In Chester, Pa., Alonso Martínez scored early and Hannes Wolf scored his first career goal late in the first half to spark New York City FC to a 2-1 victory over Philadelph­ia, handing the Union a fourth straight loss at home for the first time in club history.

Martinez scored in the second minute and Wolf earned his first goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Matt Freese had four saves in goal for NYCFC (6-5-2), who will host the Red Bulls Saturday night at Citi Field.

NHL: Avs win to force Game 6

Colorado defenseman Cale Makar scored two goals, the second after Casey Mittelstad­t’s go-ahead tally in the third period and the Avalanche beat top-seeded Dallas 5-3 in Game 5 in Dallas, snapping their three-game losing streak and extending the second-round Western Conference Series.

Dallas leads the series 3-2 with Game 6 Friday night in Colorado, where the Stars outscored the Avs 9-2 while winning Games 3 and 4.

MLB: Orioles win to avoid sweep

Adley Rutschman’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Baltimore a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays on Wednesday in Baltimore, enabling the Orioles — yet again — to avoid a sweep.

Baltimore has now gone 105 straight regular-season series of at least two decisions without being swept.

Astros starter Ronel Blanco received a 10-game suspension for violating MLB’s prohibitio­ns on foreign substances after being ejected from the game against the Athletics on Tuesday night.

In San Diego, Austin Gomber allowed two hits in six innings, Brenton Doyle and Jordan Beck homered and the Rockies beat the Padres 8-0 to complete a three-game sweep with their seventh straight victory.

In Atlanta, Javier Assad pitched six shutout innings and the Cubs avoided their first sweep of the season by beating the Braves 7-1.

In Boston, Yandy Díaz snapped a sixthinnin­g tie with a two-run single and the Rays held off the Red Sox 4-3.

In Seattle, Ty France homered for the second time in three games, Bryan Woo allowed one run over 5 ¹/₃ innings for his first win and the Mariners beat the Royals 4-2.

NBA: Lakers to speak to candidates

The Lakers have gained permission to speak with a group of assistants, according to ESPN. The list includes New Orleans’ James Borrego, Denver’s David Adelman, Boston’s Sam Cassell, Minnesota’s Micah Nori and Chris Quinn of the Heat.

Warriors star Stephen Curry is the winner of the 2023-24 Magic Johnson Award, the Profession­al Basketball Writers Associatio­n announced Wednesday.

The award is voted on by more than 200 writers and editors who belong to the PBWA and honors the NBA player who excels both on the court and in displaying “cooperatio­n and grace in dealing with the media and fans,” according to the organizati­on.
