SOCCER: Gotham FC victorious

Lynn Williams scored the lone goal in the eighth minute and Gotham FC made it hold up for a 1-0 NWSL road victory over the Houston Dash on Wednesday night.

The scoring sequence began with a cross by Jenna Nighswonge­r to Ella Stevens, who had her shot blocked by Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell. The ball caromed right to Williams, who drove it into the net for Gotham (3-2-2, 11 points), who stretched their unbeaten streak to three matches (2-0-1).

Joselu scored in the 88th minute and then in stoppage time as Real Madrid rallied to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 in Spain to reach the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons.

MLB: Skenes to make MLB debut

Paul Skenes, the top pick in last year’s amateur draft will make his major league debut for the Pirates on Saturday when they face the Cubs, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told the Associated Press. The 21-year-old former LSU star is 0-0 with a 0.99 ERA in seven Triple-A starts with Indianapol­is, 45 strikeouts in 27 ¹/₃ innings.

In Philadelph­ia, Chris Bassitt tossed three-hit ball and struck out six over 6 2/₃ innings to lead the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory that ended the Phillies’ home winning streak at 11 games.

In Atlanta, Marcell Ozuna kept up his torrid start with two more homers and Chris Sale pitched six innings against his former team, leading the Braves to a 5-0 victory over the Red Sox and a sweep of their two-game interleagu­e series

In Cleveland, shortstop Brayan Rocchio singled home automatic runner Ramón Laureano with one out in the 10th inning, giving the Guardians a 5-4 victory over the Tigers.

In Cincinnati, Jordan Montgomery allowed two runs through seven innings and the Diamondbac­ks held on to beat Cincinnati 4-3, extending the Reds skid to a season-high seven straight.

In Chicago, Dylan Cease struck out 12 and combined with two relievers on a onehitter, and the Padres beat the Cubs 3-0.

In Los Angeles, Teoscar Hernández hit a two-run homer in the sixth and the Dodgers beat the Marlins 3-1 to complete an unbeaten six-game homestand. Los Angeles extended its overall winning streak to a season-high seven games.

In Washington, Jorge Mateo drove in the go-ahead run with a 12th-inning single and the Orioles beat the Nationals 7-6 to avoid being swept for the first time in nearly two years.

In Kansas City, Mo., Bobby Witt Jr. hit a home run and scored three times to lead the Royals over the Brewers 6-4.

In Minneapoli­s, Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach hit consecutiv­e home runs in the first inning and the Twins hung on to beat the Mariners 6-3.

NBA: Beverly investigat­ed by police

Indianapol­is police announced Wednesday they’ve opened an investigat­ion into an “NBA player and citizen” altercatio­n that happened at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on the night Bucks guard Patrick Beverley threw a ball at a fan in the final minutes of a season-ending loss to the Pacers.

NHL: Lindsay Award finalists revealed Auston Matthews of the Maple Leafs, the Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov of the Lightning were named finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award. Voted on by fellow members of the NHL Players’ Associatio­n, it is presented annually to the most outstandin­g player in the NHL.
