Pine Crest girls’ volleyball places 5th of 32 at Nike tourney
The Pine Crest girls’ volleyball team went 5-1 to finish fifth of 32 teams at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Gainesville.
The Panthers defeated Jackson Academy (Mississippi), Astronaut (Titusville), Winter Haven, Santa Fe (Gainesville) and Cardinal Mooney (West Palm Beach). DeLand, which won the championship, defeated Pine Crest in the quarterfinals.
Tournament stats for Pine Crest’s top players: Mia Gold (73 kills, .340 hitting percentage, 5.25 kills per set, 23 digs, 4 aces). Isabella Sangha (37 kills, .370 hitting percentage); Isabella Medeiros (134 assists); Ali Natt (45 digs); Kaylee Foreman (70 receptions).

Plant (Tampa), which beat Gulliver Prep, won the tournament. Earlier in the event, after winning the first set, the Raiders had tough 3-set losses to Trinity Catholic (Ocala) and McGill-Toolen (Alabama). They beat Houston of Germantown, Tennessee.

Josh Rivera paced the offense with 16 carries for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns as the visiting Archbishop Carroll football team shut out Palmer Trinity 37-0 in a Class 1A matchup.
The Bulldogs’ defense recorded its second consecutive shutout. Isaiah Suarez, Kendrick Pembleton and Jonas Taylor (1 sack) led the defense, and Justin Matias had an interception.
Archbishop Carroll (3-0) will host SmartEn Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Brendan 6: In a battle of unbeatens, the Mavericks improved to 4-0, while handing St. Brendan (3-1) its first loss. Geovanni Tobon scored on a 41-yard run in the first quarter to give the Sabres a 6-0 lead, but then it was all McCarthy. Tobon finished with 90 yards on 21 carries and 1 TD.
