Douglas’ winning streak ends at 59, one game short of state record
CLEARWATER CALVARY CHRISTIAN WON 60 CONSECUTIVE GAMES FROM 2017-18. THE LAST TIME THE EAGLES LOST WAS AGAINST LAKE WORTH PARK VISTA ON MARCH 22, 2022.
Throughout the Stoneman Douglas High baseball team’s 59-game winning streak, players and coaches alike would emphasize their season long goal was always to win a state championship.
On Saturday night, the bid to equal the Florida state record of 60 consecutive victories — set by Clearwater Calvary Christian in 2017-18 — came to a screeching halt following 5-4 loss to Tallahassee
Lincoln at South Walton High in Santa Rosa Beach.
It was Douglas’ first loss since a 4-3 defeat against Lake Worth Park Vista on March 22, 2022.
With the loss, the Eagles (8-1) turn their focus on winning a fourth straight Class 7A state title and third straight national championship.
Douglas trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh before senior shortstop Devin Fitz-Gerald hit a two-run homer to close within one run of the lead.
It was Fitz-Gerald’s second two-run homer of the game after putting the ball over the fence in the bottom of the third inning that cut the Lincoln lead to 3-2.
The Trojans (4-4) took a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer in the top of the second inning off Eagles starting pitcher Jayden Dubanewicz (1-1).
Douglas resumes regular season play at home Tuesday against Coral Glades.
All three of the Eagles’ losses since the start of the 2022 season have come by one run.
One of those was Douglas’ last loss to a Broward County team, a 4-3 defeat against Taravella in the 2022 season opener.
