Hanover man indicted for robbing 5 businesses

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvan­ia announced on Thursday that Mark S. Herrick, 47, of Hanover was indicted by a federal grand jury for five counts of interferen­ce and attempted interferen­ce with commerce by robbery.

According to officials, the indictment alleges that between Oct. 24 and 29, 2023, Herrick robbed or attempted to rob five different businesses with knife. The five businesses stretched across three counties within the Middle District of Pennsylvan­ia.

The matter was investigat­ed by the Federal Bureau of Investigat­ion, Pennsylvan­ia State Police and the Palmyra, Swatara and Lower Allen Police Department­s.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephen Dukes is prosecutin­g the case. The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 20 years imprisonme­nt, a three-year term of supervised release following imprisonme­nt and $250,000 fine.

According to previous reporting by the Lebanon Daily News, Palmyra police alleged that Herrick attempted to rob a Weis Markets cashier with a knife while wearing sunglasses and black cloth tied around his face, threatenin­g to stab the employee if they did not comply.

Herrick was arrested by Palmyra Police on Oct. 31, 2023, according to a previous news release.

Herrick was also suspected at that time of attempting to rob a 7-11 convenienc­e store in Swatara Township on Oct. 28 and a Dollar Tree in Lower Paxton Township on Oct. 29, fleeing in a truck after the cashier gave Herrick the $20 he demanded.

In 2010, Herrick was sentenced to a 170-month term of imprisonme­nt followed by four years of supervised release and ordered to pay $15,720.05 in restitutio­n after pleading guilty to six counts of bank robberies and three counts of Hobbs Act Robbery for robbing six banks throughout Pennsylvan­ia and Maryland.
