No two-time Liga MX champion has reached the playo s in the following tournament

- By CARLOS ZÚÑIGA

América aims to become the fourth two-time champion of the short tournaments to fail to reach the postseason.

The Águilas del América are going through a moment of pure crisis after being defeatedby Cruz Azul in the recent Apertura 2024 and having suffered their fourth defeat in just six games of the current championship. This dismal start coincides with what, historically, other teams that have been two-time champions, under the short tournament format, have presented the following tournament to achieve such an achievement.

No one has made it to the playoffs after being two-time champion

Pumas

The Grst to do so were the Universitarios, who won the 2004 Clausura and Apertura titles; however, for the 2005 Clausura, they Gnished in sixteenth place, with only four wins in a 17-game schedule.

León

Precisely by preventing the Águilas from becoming two-time champions, the 'Fiera' won the Apertura 2013 and Clausura 2014 championships. However, for the 2014 Apertura, the 'Esmeralda' team was stuck in tenth place overall, so they had no chance of Gghting to retain the crown.

Atlas

The Rojinegros ended a streak of practically 70 years without a title until the Apertura 2021, when they won on penalties against the 'Fiera' of León. Six months later, they renewed their title by defeating the Tuzos of Pachuca away from home. Just like the previous ones, they fell short in the Apertura 2022 with a more limited squad that Gnished in second-to-last place overall.

Will the Águilas be able to change that streak?

The 'Azulcrema' institution still holds the double crown and the benevolent Liga MX competition system would allow them to change this statistic if in the remaining eleven rounds they manage to reach at least eighth place, or else reach tenth place and extend their stay in the tournament through the Play-in.
