Bulldogs defeat Eagles in extra innings

- BY TOM RONCO

CALEXICO- An Imperial Valley League baseball game that began in San Diego on Tuesday afternoon was finally settled ten innings later on Wednesday evening with the Calexico High Bulldogs defeating the Southwest High Eagles by a score of 2-1.

The winning run came in the bottom of the tenth inning when Calexico’s junior shortstop Randy Baez got aboard on a base-on-balls off Southwest junior pitcher Cole Redden.

The next batter was Bulldog senior Andres Ontiveros whom Southwest had been given three intentional walks in the game with Ontiveros stinging a double on the first pitch to score drive in Baez.

Andres made them pay on the first pitch as he smoked the ball down the right-field line, Calexico coach Steve Torres said. Their right-fielder did not field it cleanly and that gave Baez the time he needed to score without play at home.

The initial game at PETCO Park was part of the 2024 Padres and CIFSan Diego Section Present High School Baseball but was suspended because of a time limit with the game tied 1-1.
