Meet me at the Court reschedules free lunch

- BY TIA LYONS STAFF WRITER

Meet Me at the Court hopes the third time will be the charm for its next Lunch on Us project.

The group initially planned to take its community-service initiative — which provides food and other life essentials and assistance to low-income families, senior citizens and the city’s homeless population — to Haygood-Neal Garden Apartments on July 8 but the event was called off due to inclement weather.

LOU was reset for Aug. 17 but was again postponed after MMC lost a member of its extended family, John C. Hall, 98, who passed away on Aug. 8.

Veronica Bailey, founder and CEO of MMC, said the group intends to head to Haygood-Neal at noon on Saturday to distribute BBQ lunches and Love Baskets filled with fresh produce, including cabbage, collard greens, onions, squash and watermelon.

As she has done before, Bailey emphasized that the event is open to Haygood-Neal residents only.

“When we do events like that, it’s for the people who live in the neighborhoods that we go to,” she explained.

“We’ve had other people who don’t live there pull up with other people who don’t live there,” Bailey continued.

MMC also plans to assist the homeless on Saturday.

“We’re not going into any particular area, just wherever we see the need,” she said.

MMC is also preparing for its 11th annual Sharion Bailey Whitlock Carnival of Love.

The event is set for 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 in Mattocks Park, which is in the area of Detroit Avenue and Burns Street. The carnival will include food, games, a bounce house and chili and dessert cook-offs. The event is open to the public and admission, food and activities are free.
