Shake Shack plans to open a second area location

- — Marcia Greenwood

New York state’s first Shake Shack outside New York City and the state Thruway hasn’t yet opened in Henrietta, but the wheels are in motion for a westside location. A spokesperson for the popular restaurant chain wrote in an email Friday that Shake Shack plans to open a restaurant in Greece in 2025.

She wouldn’t say anything beyond that. However, in April, the Greece Planning Board approved site plans for construction of a 3,020-square-foot quick-serve restaurant in the parking lot of The Mall at Greece Ridge across West Ridge Road from Chick-fil-A. The business wasn’t named, but the town confirmed it’s Shake Shack.

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said the company’s decision to open a location in the town speaks to its commercial vibrancy. “Businesses want to be here,” he said. “We have a 96 or 97% occupancy rate in our commercial space.”

He added, “It’s always exciting to see a new business come to town. We were the first to have Chickfil-A. And (Shake Shack) is going to be something different for the community. It gives them one more choice.”

Proposed hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Construction appears to be wrapping up on the Henrietta Shake Shack at 245 Clay Road at the corner of Jefferson Road, but the company spokesperson said an opening date has not been finalized.

Shake Shack began in 2001 as a hot dog cart near New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Three years later it evolved into a burger kiosk and, having developed cult-like following, has grown to more than 400 locations worldwide. The chain is best known for its burgers, but the menu also includes chicken sandwiches and bites, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries, milkshakes, lemonade and iced tea.
