Braves continue surge with impressive Saturday showing

- MATTHEW KLINGENBERGER Sports Reporter

Four victories at the Yorktown Varsity Invite on Saturday extended the win streak for Bellmont Volleyball to six.

After taking down South Adams on Thursday, Bellmont (7-3) started the day with a 2-1 win over the Westfield Shamrocks.

Bellmont won the opening set, 25-20. Westfield (8-2, 1-0 Hoosier Crossroads) won the second set by the same score.

With the match on the line, the third set was hard fought. Playing to 15 points, both teams reached 14, meaning the winning side would have to go beyond the original target score to win the match.

The Braves did exactly that by taking points 15 and 16. MaryKate Scheumann led the Bellmont offense with 13 kills.

Scheumann, Gracie Riggs and Kamryn Jarvis each had two blocks. Alyssa Gumbel had one block.

The Braves needed only two sets to secure the win versus Crown Point (7-3, 2-0 Duneland) in their second match of the day. Bellmont won the match with a pair of 25-22 wins in the two sets.

Scheumann again had the most kills, racking up a dozen. Gumbel had seven, followed by the five posted by Brea Shoaf.

Riggs was responsible for each of the 28 assists the Braves had in their win over the Bulldogs.

In their third match of the day, the Braves picked up their second win of the season over the Concordia Lutheran Cadets.

The win over Concordia Lutheran (2-7) accounted for the second two-set win of the day for Bellmont.

Bellmont took the first set, 25-23. The Braves finished off the win with a 28-26 victory in the second.

Mills, Shoaf and Gumbel each had a service ace.

Riggs added another 29 assists.

The undefeated day was capped off with a three-set victory over Zionsville (5-4, 0-1 Hoosier Crossroads).

The Braves topped the Eagles, 25-23, in set one to take a 1-0 lead.

Zionsville canceled that out with a win in the second set to even the overall score.

The third set of their match with Zionsville was not nearly as dramatic as the third set of their opening match on Saturday. Bellmont won 15-9 to complete the victory.
