Jean Raines

-

Jean Raines, age 88, passed away on January 12, 2024, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on February 14, 1935 in Hampton and she loved being known as a Valentine's Day baby.

After graduating from Hampton High School in 1943, Jean married Walter Raines and they enjoyed a loving marriage until his death in 2019. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, an exceptional homemaker, and a wonderful cook. She was especially known for her pound cake. Jean was a dedicated member of Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church. She was also very active in the United Methodist Women, both at the local and District level, and served as president of the Jean Raines Circle. She enjoyed working with children and for many years served as Superintendent of the Children's Division of Sunday School, taught the first through third grade Sunday School class, and served as the coordinator of Vacation Bible School. When she wasn't busy with her work at the church, Jean's hobbies included reading, flower gardening, and needlework. She adored cats and adopted several strays over the years. When Walter first retired, they enjoyed traveling around the country and even to Europe on guided tours. In addition to her husband Walter, Jean was preceded in death by her great granddaughter, Delilah Jean Gunn. She is survived by her three children Kathy Ames (Chris), Timothy Raines, and Stephanie Caggiano (John); seven grandchildren, Kyle Ames, Corey Ames, Megan Quinn (Michael), Libby Raines, Lee Raines, Katherine Caggiano and Ethan Caggiano; two great-grandchildren, Bliss Quinn and Prim Quinn; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 AM, Thursday at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church, 501 Beach Rd, Hampton by the Rev. Eric J. Vaudt, followed by interment in Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church or the Peninsula Rescue Mission. The family would like to thank her personal caregiver, Karen Cooper, for her exceptional and dedicated care of mom. Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
