Biles on track for her 3rd Olympics

-

Simone Biles is four rotations away from a third trip to the Olympics.

While not at her unparalleled best, Biles had little trouble sprinting to the lead at the U.S. Olympic trials Friday in Minneapolis. Her all-around score of 58.900 put her well ahead of good friend Jordan Chiles and in position to lock up an automatic berth on the fivewoman team if she finds herself in the same position when the trials wrap up Sunday.

Biles grew frustrated during an uncharacteristically sloppy balance-beam routine, cursing shortly after sticking her dismount. Her score of 13.650 was fifth-best among the 13 competitors on an event in which she is a four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist.

She also stepped out of bounds on her floor routine. But Biles ended on a high note, nailing her signature Yurchenko Double Pike vault that drew a standing ovation. Her score of 15.975 was the highest of the night on any event by a wide margin.

GOLF Bensel aces consecutive holes in U.S. Senior Open

Frank Bensel, a 56-year-old club pro from New York, made back-to-back holes-in-one at the U.S. Senior Open in Newport, Rhode Island — a first in the 1,001-tournament history of the USGA and believed to be the only time it has happened on any major golf tour. Bensel aced the fourth and fifth holes, but he missed the cut with a 9-over total. Hiroyuki Fujita holds a one-shot lead at 11-under 129.

♦ Miles Russell, a 15-year-old amateur from Florida, shot 70 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit and missed the cut at even-par 144 in his PGA Tour debut. Akshay Bhatia and Aaron Rai share the lead going into the weekend at 13-under 131.

♦ Nelly Korda said she was bitten by a dog in Seattle and will not defend her title next week at the Ladies European Tour event outside London.

MISCELLANEOUS Red Stars shut out San Diego

The Red Stars (6-7-2) posted a 3-0 victory over host San Diego (3-7-5) before a crowd of 24,115. Alyssa Naeher got the shutout. Mallory Swanson and Jameese Joseph scored. The third goal was an own goal.

♦ The Phillies put All-Star first baseman Bryce Harper (strained left hamstring) and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (strained left groin) on the 10-day injured list after they were hurt Thursday.

♦ Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale, 85, said on social media he has been diagnosed with cancer for a fourth time. A biopsy of a lymph node showed cancer.

♦ The Hawks reportedly will trade high-scoring Dejounte Murray to the Pelicans for a package expected to include two first-round draft picks.
