SIOUX FALLS - Allen “Guy” Granum, Jr., age 70, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a short battle with cancer.

Guy was born Aug. 31, 1953, to Allen and Ann (Reese) Granum in Sioux Falls, S.D., at McKennan Hospital. He grew up in the Riverside neighborhood on north Lewis Avenue with his three older sisters, Kay, Barb and Linda, and younger brother, Jim. He earned the nickname “Guy” from his parents. They called him “Little Guy” and “Guy Guy.” Guy and Jim and the neighborhood boys spent a lot of time outdoors and did a lot of exploring.

He graduated from Washington High School and later took culinary classes at Mitchell Vo-Tech. He began working at Sunshine at 12th and Kiwanis in 1971 and later worked in the bakery at Sunshine downtown. The past couple decades, he cleaned office buildings, including Shriver Square, Sanford Medical Building 2, Tel Drug and FedEx. He retired in October 2023.

Guy’s favorite vacations were his three trips to Europe with his parents. They spent time in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Norway. They also enjoyed numerous trips to Las Vegas where they stayed at Circus Circus. He liked going to visit Jim in Indianapolis and attending the Indy 500 races.

Guy was born with neurofibromatosis. Despite his health challenges, he persevered and enjoyed life. His memory was amazing. If you wanted to know something about Sioux Falls or the eastern half of South Dakota, you could ask him. He spent the last 20 years living in an apartment at Sunnycrest Village and liked spending time with his brother-in-law Bert.

Thank you to Bert and all of the health care workers who helped Guy the past several weeks and months.

Survivors include his sister, Barb Niemann of Bridgewater, S.D.; brother Jim (Renee) of St. George, Utah; brothers-in-law Bert Schroeder of Sioux Falls and Dale Kirk of Centerville, S.D.; nieces and nephews, Troy, Lori, Kim, Scott, Jill, Cary, Crystal, Tracy, Aubrey, Allison and Erin; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Kay Schroeder and Linda Kirk; and nephews Todd and Jason.

No viewing or services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held later in the summer 2024
