Blanco has two h-place nishes at CIF Finals

WALNUT — The Palmdale Aerospace Academy junior Giles Blanco had two fifth-place finishes at the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Finals on Thursday at the Mt. San Antonio College Aquatic Center.

Blanco finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal record time of 21.89 seconds.

Blanco also finished fifth in the 100 free with a PR of 48.30.

Baseball Quartz Hill 13, Charter Oak 1

QUARTZ HILL — The Quartz Hill baseball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 13-1 victory over Charter Oak on Thursday in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 first-round playoff game at Quartz Hill High.

The Royals (25-5) will host Canyon of Anaheim for a second-round game on Tuesday.

Quartz Hill senior pitcher Ismael Quintero struck out eight batters in six innings, giving him his 10th win of the year and 100 strikeouts this season.

Quartz Hill senior leadoff batter Esteban Sepulveda homered for the Royals and drove in two runs.

Quartz Hill senior Jeffrey Kavanagh was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run and senior Connor Gregory was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for the Royals.

Quartz Hill outhit Charter Oak 11-5 and rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

Rio Mesa 10, Highland 0

PALMDALE — The Highland baseball team lost its Division 4 firstround playoff game, 10-0 to Rio Mesa on Thursday at Highland High School.

Highland (23-6) won its third Golden League championsh­ip this season.

Rion Mesa (17-10) will play at Ontario Christian in the second round on Tuesday.

Softball Eastside 17, Sacred Heart LA 3 (5)

The Eastside softball team continues to make history this year after earning the program’s first playoff win with a 17-3, five inning victory over Sacred Heart of Jesus Los Angeles on Thursday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

The Lions will get another first next week when they host their first playoff game on Tuesday in the second round against Lennox Academy.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Eastside coach Eric Price said. “I told the girls, ‘Just one game at a time, let’s continue making history.’”

Price said Aprill Medrano hit the ball hard and Luz Navarro got the win in the circle and was 4-for-4 at the plate. Beth Jimenez also had five RBIs for the Lions, who are now 19-10 on the season, which is the best record in school history, so far.

Quartz Hill 10, Apple Valley 0

QUARTZ HILL — The Quartz Hill softball team beat Apple Valley 10-0 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 5 first-round playoff game on Thursday at Quartz Hill High School.

Quartz Hill (20-5) will play at Carter (17-5) in the second round on Tuesday. Carter beat Artesia 13-12 on Thursday.

The Royals won the Golden League championsh­ip this season.

Valley Christian 6, Highland 3

CERRITOS — The Highland softball team lost 6-3 at Valley Christian High in a CIF-Southern Section Division 5 first-round playoff game on Thursday.

Highland (16-10) finished second in the Golden League this season.

Valley Christian (14-6) will play Shadow Hills in a second-round game on Tuesday.
