Crashes, cleanup delay traffic
AMSTERDAM — Crews spent hours Friday cleaning up after a tractor-trailer carrying hydrogen peroxide rolled over on the state Thruway, State Police said.
Police were called around 5:25 p.m. Thursday for the rollover crash near Exit 27 westbound, Trooper Stephanie O’neil told the Times Union. The off-ramp was now closed as hydrogen peroxide was transported from that vehicle into other tractor-trailers, she said.
“There is no public safety concern due to this material,” O’neil said. “Strictly we don’t want that material spilled into the environment.”
It’s not clear how much or if any hydrogen peroxide was spilled, O’neil said. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is monitoring cleanup.
Traffic was rerouted to either Route 5S eastbound or Route 161 westbound. The state Department of Transportation
is monitoring detours.
The driver had no significant injuries, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, O’neil said. The cause is still under investigation.
Second rollover crash closes section of Northway
State Police responded to a second tractor-trailer rollover Friday morning in Queensbury.
Police were called around 5 a.m. for a tractor-trailer overturned in the median just south of Exit 18 southbound on the Northway, O’neil said. The driver was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for serious injuries. No other vehicles were involved.
The center and left lane of the Northway southbound remained closed at that exit as police investigated the cause and removed the vehicle, O’neil said. Traffic had backed up significantly.
While DEC was notified, no spills had been reported.
