Forestry England aims to involve local residents in projects in Devon

-

FORESTRY England has invited local residents to have their say on new woodland creation plans for sites near Burriott and Ashwater, in north Devon.

Forestry England has purchased the two plots, totalling 110 hectares, to create ‘Coronation Woods’, which will celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

The new woodland near Burriott will be planted with mixed broadleaf and conifer species and will incorporate open space for conservation and visual appeal. The new woodland at

Quoditch, near Ashwater, aims to improve the site for nature conservation. Both woodlands will be managed by Forestry England to provide sustainably grown timber for the nation, promote public access for informal recreation, and improve habitats for wildlife.

Forestry England’s draft designs are available to view online until July 28. The plans will also be shared at public consultation events for Quoditch on Monday, July 22 (4pm to 7pm), at Ashwater Parish Hall (EX21 5EZ), and for Burriott on

Tuesday, July 23 (4pm to 7pm), at High Bickington Community Hall (EX37 9HG). Residents are invited to drop in any time between 4pm and 7pm on those days to view the proposed designs and speak to a member of Forestry England staff.

Kevin Stannard, Forestry England’s forest management director in the west of England, said: “I’m excited to share our proposals for these two new woodlands with the local people who will be most involved in their future. The sites are being designed to mitigate the challenges of our changing climate, while providing sustainably grown timber products, access for people, and havens for nature.

“We are keen to involve local communities in the design process so we can incorporate their needs and hopes for these woodlands. I hope community members will join us to explore the plans or have their say online.”

The new Coronation Woodlands will contribute to Forestry England’s ambition to create 2,000 hectares of new woodland across the country by 2026. For more information, visit: www. forestryengland.uk/growing-thenations-forests
