Vyner and Cornick look set to return for Robins

BRISTOL City hope to have both Zak Vyner and Harry Cornick back involved for their friendlies against Cheltenham Town and Exeter City today and tomorrow after the pair were absent from the Robins’ matches against Newport County and Aldershot Town on Tuesday.

Two separate squads were given their first run outs of pre-season earlier this week, both winning 2-0. Second half goals from Nahki Wells and new arrival Sinclair Armstrong secured victory over Newport at the High Perfornance Centre before Sam Bell and Cam Pring were on the scoresheet away at National League outfit Aldershot in the evening.

However, it was noticed that, at least from the pool of last season’s first-team regulars, that both Vyner and Cornick were missing from both squads. According to Chris Hogg though, there’s nothing to be concerned about.

“Zak’s training back at the training ground so hopefully he’ll be back with the group in the next couple of days,” the City assistant head coach revealed.

“Harry Cornick has been off for a couple of days so hopefully he’ll also be back for the games at the weekend.”

Both were regulars throughout last campaign, making 41 and 45 appearances across all competitions respectively.

Although, despite featuring in more games, Cornick earned just nine starts, two of which coming in the League Cup, while Vyner was a constant fixture when available, starting 35 league matches. A ligament injury between September and October kept the defender out for the final seven league games of Nigel Pearson’s reign while he also missed three of the final four matches of the campaign, coming on as a substitute in the final day defeat at Stoke City.

Rob Dickie, Kal Naismith and Joseph James lined up together for the Aldershot test while a combination of George Tanner, Rob Atkinson and Josh Campbell-Slowey played against Newport.

Meanwhile for Cornick, competition up front has grown on the back of the acquisitions of Fally Mayulu and Armstrong.

Additionally, Nahki Wells got himself on the scoresheet against Newport but, if available, you would expect the 29-year-old to be involved in either match in some capacity.

The Robins will travel to League Two side Cheltenham tonight before hosting League One outfit Exeter at the HPC tomorow afternoon with the Championship season set to start away at Hull City on August 10.
