SOUND JUDGEMENT

The latest album releases reviewed

- Peggy Gou

I HEAR YOU

★★★★☆ Peggy Gou’s studio debut album opens with the futuristic spoken word Your Art. Its edgy synth pop sets the theme for the record.

Back To One infuses drum and bass sounds, while Lenny Kravitz features on I Believe In Love Again – a funky, upbeat summer song.

All That is a standout – darker than the dreamy cosmic sound that dominates the record.

(It Goes Like) Nanana is a breezy, banging dance track.

The set ends with 1+1=11, a percussive, heavy song that’s going to be blasted at festivals and in clubs all summer. A strong track to finish, and a strong album.

BRAT Charlie XCX ★★★☆☆

The singersongwriter’s latest is reminiscent of her early days as a featuring artist on Icona Pop’s I Love It.

Inspired by the illegal London rave scene she performed at during her teen years, techno beats are prevalent throughout the tracklist.

Lead single Von Dutch is easily the highlight. Selfabsorbed lyrics and grinding electro are skilfully shaped by Easyfun’s great production.

However, the majority of the songs feel saturated with too many ideas. Tracks such as

360 and Talk Talk follow a more traditional pop formula, while I Might Say Something Stupid eases back the pace.

Overall, despite promising moments, the record feels like a work in progress.

FOREVER Bon Jovi ★★★★☆

Bon Jovi return with another epic album, opening strong with Legendary, which looks back on their 40-year career.

The country-tinged We Made It Look Easy follows, before Living Proof’s lively hooks recalls their Livin’ On A Prayer-era prime.

Jon Bon Jovi’s powerful vocals have not faltered and the band keeps things catchy and fresh, refining their sound to reflect their maturity. It’s an effective combo that will mean you’ll want to keep this latest offering on repeat.
