Scarpa Zodiac Tech GTX £290
Though hybrid hiking/mountaineering boots might seem like a new niche, brands like Scarpa have been making them for years. The Zodiac Tech boot, based on its original Zodiac approach shoe, was developed for Alpine guides and search and rescue teams, who needed lightweight boots for extended use, stiff and supportive enough for technical terrain and crampons.
Although newer technologies have pushed the Zodiac Tech to the back of the pack in weight terms, it doesn’t feel heavy. The latest model features an improved fit for men and women, with refined ActivFit lasts and Sockfit technology for comfort and mobility. Its traditional design includes extended lacing with metal eyelets, a gusseted tongue, and locking lace hooks.
Made from tough Perwanger Nepal suede leather with a high rubber rand and GoreTex membrane, these boots offer durability and waterproof performance. The ankle cuff features a snug elastic half-gaiter, and the Vibram outsole with BAS technology provides excellent grip on various surfaces. This model balances technical performance and all-day comfort, making it a favourite among climbers, guides, and rescue
personnel. For those prioritising lightweight boots, newer options like the Scarpa Ribelle series are available, but at a higher cost. ■ WEIGHT: 680g per boot (UK 8) ■ SIZES: Men’s EU 41-48, women’s EU 37-42
