MSR Hubba NX £520
When it comes to lightweight solo tents, MSR’s Hubba NX is a true modern classic. The freestanding design is impressively lightweight, with a compact packed size that’ll fit in most rucksacks.
It’s easy to pitch and sturdy enough for 3-season camping, while the tent’s geometry and non-tapered floor maximise space. The hubbed pole system has an integrated spreader bar for improved interior headroom and a rectangular footprint that feels more stable than the tripod designs of rivals. There are steep walls at both the head and foot ends, ensuring lots of liveable space.
It primarily pitches inner first, using plastic clips to attach the inner to the pole structure. However, it is possible to pitch outer first, though it’s a bit of a faff.
The tent is well-built, with first-rate materials including reinforced pegging points, quick-adjust buckles and anodised aluminium hardware. The inner is comprised of fabric and mesh, offering good ventilation without feeling too draughty. The flysheet provides good coverage with four guy lines to keep it securely anchored, and feels robust and protective enough for 3-season UK use. You can boost the tent’s durability with the addition of MSR’s Universal 1P footprint (sold for around £40 and adding 198g).
