Explore some of the gaming world’s most inspirational characters.
National Superhero Day takes place on 28 April. It’s a great excuse for dressing up as your favourite superhero, while celebrating people in your life that you find inspiring.
There are plenty of heroes to be found in games too, and not just the ones featuring popular Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man and Thor.
Start with Mario, the heroic and bouncy plumber who has been starring in games since 1981. His fun exploits include soccer in Mario Strikers:
Battle League Football, golf with Mario
Golf: Super Rush and traditional platform-jumping with Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
Don’t forget Princess Peach, though. Mario’s royal friend is currently starring in her own Princess Peach: Showtime! game that puts her in a range of different heroic roles. Sticking with princesses, Princess Leia was an important character in the original Star Wars films, and she’s one of the best heroes to unlock in console game Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Anakin Skywalker, C-3PO and Obi-Wan Kenobi are among the many other characters you can play as in that game.
Not all heroes wear capes but Steve from Minecraft sometimes does. He has been the hero since the game’s early days and he’s now been joined by other characters. He’s also one of the most popular characters in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game.
The Legend of Zelda games’ most obvious hero is Link, but Princess Zelda has become just as heroic over the years, helping him to defend the kingdom of Hyrule. Both star in the latest game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Finally, the animal kingdom provides some unusual game heroes – like the goose from Untitled Goose Game. Whether honking for fun or stealing picnics, this goose is a bird worth celebrating.
