Wednesday, Film4, 11am Sir Alec Guinness (right) delivers eight tour-de-force performances in this Ealing black comedy. The film revolves around the eccentric d’ascoyne family – all played by Guinness – whose fortune proves a temptation too great for relative Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price), who schemes to murder family members who stand in his way.
Philomena
Thursday, BBC4, 10pm Based on a true story, journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) helps retired Irish nurse Philomena (Judi Dench, above with Coogan) look for the son she was forced to give up to nuns in the 1950s. A tender and unexpectedly touching relationship forms between these two characters from different generations and backgrounds in Stephen Frears’ emotional yet uplifting movie.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Friday, BBC1, 11.35pm
Take a bevy of Australian drag queens shimmying across the outback to a gig in Alice Springs, add a bus (called Priscilla) and sprinkle with disco hits and Oscarwinning costumes and you have the surprise hit of 1994.
