Four-day working week boosts legal firm’s turnover

- Scott Reid

A Glasgow-based legal firm has reported a jump in turnover as it switches permanently to a four-day working week following a successful trial period.

Complete Clarity Solicitors and Simplicity Legal, which has a headcount of 30, said fullyear turnover had risen to £1.9 million, from £1.7m in the previous 12-month period. Bosses said The firm had established its own “unique corporate culture” and a reputation for staff development and retention. The present headcount is up from 22 in September 2022.

Founded in 2010, Complete Clarity also owns Simplicity Legal, which it established in 2015 with the aim of filling a gap in the market for fixed-fee family law work and fully merged with in 2017.

Director Billy Smith said: “Our focus in the year has been to make the four-day working week a permanent part of our approach to professional practice. We found throughout the pilot that the option to work condensed hours, with Mondays or Fridays off, boosted both our productivity and team spirit, so we decided this was an advantage we would need to make permanent.

“I’m not sure how many legal practices operate on the same four-day week basis as we do but since we have also found it a tremendous aid to the recruitmentof quality staff, i’ d suggest they may be missing out. Our numbers and uplifted turnover in the year show that driving towards the best working environment encourages our staff to deliver exceptional service levels and, ultimately, high level client satisfaction .”

In January this year the firm moved to a departmental structure: family law, dispute resolution, housing, private client, employment and business and property. This “delineation” is also credited with aiding retention and recruitment.
