An Irish goal for Posh loanee

-

Posh loanee Sam Curtis scored a late winning goal for the Republic of Ireland Under 21s in a European Championship qualifying match in Turkey.

Curtis struck the only goal of the game with six minutes to go in Istanbul as Ireland kept alive their hopes of reaching the finals.

But those hopes subsided when Ireland were held to a 2-2 draw by Latvia in Dublin on Tuesday. Curtis again played the full 90 minutes even though he picked up a caution in the first-half.

Ireland now look unlikely to qualify automatically for the finals in a group being led by Italy. They will now compete for a play-off place along with Norway.

Curtis is only 18, but has now won 12 Under 21 caps for his country. Curtis is on loan at Posh from Championship side Sheffield United.

Posh captain and star midfielder Hector Kyprianou now has 10 Cyprus caps.

The 23 year-old started a 1-0 in a Nations League game in Lithuania, but was cautioned in the first-half and taken off at the break.

And Kyprianou was again taken off at half-time after starting a Nations League game against Kosovo in Lanarca, Cyprus.

It was 2-0 to the visitors at the time and Kosovo went on to win 4-0. Kyprianou played as one of three centre-backs in both games.

Teenage Posh centre-back George Nevett started and played 90 minutes of an under 19 2-2 friendly draw between Wales and Turkmenistan in Spain on Saturday.

Nevett was on the substitutes’ bench for a 3-0 friendly win over Azerbaijan on Monday, also in Spain, and came on for the final 20 minutes.
