POINT TO POINT

-

AFTER steering Sine Nomine to victory by 15 lengths in a Wetherby Hunters’ Chase on Saturday, John Dawson rounded off a great weekend with a double on yesterday’s Sinnington card at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, writes PETER BURGON.

Former 145-rated hurdler Mount Mews initiated the double with a sixth win from his last seven starts between the flags in the Mixed Open Race, but it was only after a prolonged duel from two out that Dawson’s mount prevailed by a head from Torygraph.

Dawson doubled up on the Fiona Needham-trained gelding Red Delta in the Maiden Race. He disputed the lead two out before being sent on after the last and quickened 20 lengths clear up the long run-in for a very impressive success over Buy Some Time. The well- related winner was bought for only £3,000 as an unraced three-yearold at Goffs Doncaster Sale in August 2022.

Morpeth raider Supremely Lucky made light of the worsening weather in the Veteran Horse Conditions Race, getting a head in front after a string of placed efforts since joining James Cookson’s yard two years ago. Natasha Cookson’s mount stayed on dourly in the closing stages to score by 12 lengths as his main rivals slowed almost to a walk.

Odds-on favourite Camdonian initiated a training double for Malton handler Jack Teal in the Conditions Race. Ridden as usual by Christy Furness, the eight-year-old was able to coast home 15 lengths ahead of Donna’s Delight.

Teal then partnered ex-Irish pointer Fire In Her Eyes to victory in the Restricted Race. It soon developed into a duel between Teal’s mount and Wottinger (John Dawson), who had dead-heated at Sheriff Hutton three weeks ago, but the former kept on when challenged to win by five lengths.

Tim Easterby’s family celebrated a first and last-race double courtesy of Rue Galilee and Long Time Listener ridden by sons William and Thomas respectively. Always prominent in the Members Race, Rue Galilee held a narrow lead over a quintet of challengers two out before steadily drawing away up the hill to beat promising debutant Alma De Dios by five lengths.

The six-year-old was bought as a foal for €10,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Sale in November 2018 and, after being given plenty of time to mature, gained valuable racecourse experience last year before catching the eye when in contention for a long way in a higher grade on Pointing debut at Alnwick in mid-December.

Easterby had to settle for third on Alltalknoaction in the concluding 2m Flat Race behind debutant Long Time Listener ridden by younger brother Thomas. The four-year-old, bought for €6,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Sale in November 2021 comfortably held off a late challenge from Stress Reaction by a couple of lengths.
