Five dead after tornado batters Baiyun

-

Five people were killed when a tornado struck the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

State media said more than 140 factory buildings were damaged by the twister, which occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Baiyun district of Guangzhou, a sprawling metropolis and manufacturing centre near Hong Kong.

Videos posted online show how the mid-afternoon sky darkened and debris started swirling up into the air.

Aerial photos taken in the aftermath show wide devastation in the area.

The images, posted by Chinese state media on Sunday, show street after street of flattened buildings in the hardest hit areas, with a few clusters of buildings standing amid the destruction. Cars can be seen crushed by rubble, and some buildings have had their sheet metal roofs torn off.

Authorities said 33 people were injured.

Tornado warnings were issued for other parts of Guangzhou and there were unconfirmed reports that a second tornado appeared to have hit another district in the city later in the afternoon.

Mykolaiv: Russian drones have struck the Black Sea city of Mykolaiv, setting a hotel on fire and damaging energy infrastructure, the local Ukrainian governor has said.

Vitaliy Kim said Russian drones “seriously damaged” the hotel and affected heat-generating infrastructure in the city. He added that there were no casualties.

Russian state agency RIA carried claims that the strike on Mykolaiv targeted a shipyard where naval drones are assembled, as well as a hotel housing “Englishspeaking mercenaries” who have fought for Kyiv.

The RIA report cited Sergei Lebedev, described as a co-ordinator of local pro-moscow guerrillas. His claim could not be independently verified.

Also yesterday morning, the Russian defence ministry said 17 Ukrainian drones were downed overnight over four regions in the country’s south-west. Three drones were intercepted near an oil depot in Lyudinovo. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.

Russian shelling on Saturday and overnight wounded at least seven civilians across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.

Australia: Rallies have taken place across Australia in response to a wave of recent violence against women.

Demonstrators want gender-based violence to be declared a national emergency and stricter laws put in place to stop it.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the issue was a national crisis.

In Australia, a woman has been killed on average every four days so far this year.

Organiser Martina Ferrara said: “We want alternative reporting options for victim survivors, to let them own their stories and own their healing and reporting journey.

“And we want the government to acknowledge this is an emergency action and take immediate action.”

Speaking at a march in the capital Canberra attended by thousands of protesters, Mr Albanese admitted the government needed to do better.
