RENFREW manager Jimmy Quigley admits he is still peering over his shoulder at the relegation zone, despite watching his team move into the promotion places in the First Division table.

The New Western Park men made it six games without defeat on Saturday, thanks to a 4-0 win at home to Ardrossan Winton Rovers, with Scott Morton, Fraser Sheridan, Jojo Gillespie and Andrew Skinner all on target.

Renfrew have been lethal in front of goal this season, having netted at least three goals in five of their eight league fixtures.

Despite only conceding nine goals in that time, Saturday was their first clean sheet.

Quigley was pleased to see his troops kick on after an under-par first half and also praised his central defensive duo for their contribution.

He told Gazette Sport: “It was another really good win for us against a team who try to play football the right way.

“We were quite sloppy and lethargic in the first half but managed to get a goal ahead and we put the foot down in the second half. It could have been more than four, it was a really good performance.

“We’ve been scoring lots of goals and we’ve got plenty of options up front. Ben Harwood came back over the summer a different player, Jojo is averaging a goal every game at the minute, Fraser Sheridan gives us other options in the wide areas and everyone else is kicking on.

“The best players on the park were Ryan Rutherford and Stuart Fyfe at the back, who both did really well. They both defend with pride and passion.

“It’s been pleasing to get so many goals but I’m delighted for the guys at the back as well for picking up their first clean sheet.

“We’re just looking to get to that 30-point mark and make sure we don’t go down. We’re looking to get away from the relegation zone and, from there, we can reassess.

“Anybody can beat anybody in this league, so it’s about taking it one game at a time.

“We need to make sure that we are safe first of all.”

Renfrew are on South Challenge Cup duty this weekend as they host St Cuthbert Wanderers.

Quigley said: “There will be one or two changes but I don’t want to kill the momentum and we won’t be treating it lightly.”

Kick-off in the second round cup clash at New Western Park on Saturday is at 2pm.
