Stab accused girl’s brother also arrested after school attack

- By Albert Tait

POLICE have arrested the brother of a girl who allegedly stabbed two teachers and a pupil at a high school in Wales, The Telegraph understands.

Dyfed-powys Police said a teenage boy from the Cross Hands area remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of making threats, which referenced the incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman.

He has been named locally as the brother of a girl who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the school, also known as Amman Valley School, in Carmarthenshire after two teachers and a pupil sustained stab wounds on Wednesday morning.

Dyfed-powys Police declined to confirm the relationship between the two youngsters but locals from Ammanford confirmed they are brother and sister.

Yesterday, police said investigations into both incidents were being run separately, though officers were examining “whether there was any connection between the alleged offences”.

Supt Ross Evans said: “I would like to provide an update into the two investigations we are currently running following [Wednesday’s] incident here at the Ysgol Dyffryn Aman.

“As you’ll be aware, there was a multiagency emergency response to the school at around 11.20am following reports that three people have been injured.

“Two teachers and a pupil were taken to hospital with stab wounds. They received treatment for knife injuries. I am pleased to confirm they have all since been discharged.

“A Cid-led investigation was launched and there has continued to be a police presence here at the school today, as we gather evidence to assist our employees.

“A 13-year-old girl was arrested at the scene. I can confirm she has now been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

“Following this, [on Wednesday] evening, our control room received a number of calls reporting concerns about messages being shared on social media, which had references to the incident here at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman.

“Officers swiftly carried out the warrant at the home of the person believed to be responsible for this content and a 15-year-old male has been arrested. He also remains in police custody whilst we investigate these allegations.”.

He added: “We would like to thank the many members of the public who reported concerns around messages they had seen online. This allowed us to take swift action in executing a warrant and arresting a suspect.

“While this investigation is being run separately to our enquiries into the major incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Amman yesterday, our officers will be seeking to establish both the credibility of the threats, and whether there was any connection between the alleged offences.

“Again, I would urge people not to speculate, not to share any images or videos relating to either investigation, and to allow us to carry out our enquiries fully.”

Previously, the force said officers had executed a warrant at an address in Ammanford overnight and recovered a BB gun following “threats involving a firearm”.

The stabbed teachers, named as Fiona Elias, the head of Year 7, and Liz Hopkin, who is reportedly a special needs teacher, have since been discharged from hospital along with the wounded pupil.

The arrested girl remains in custody.
