Fun day to raise cash for homeless cats

A TYNESIDE cat rehoming centre is set to host a family fun day to raise money as animals increasingly arrive at its centre in a “terrible state”.

Cats Protection Tyneside Cat Centre on Green Lane in Gateshead has seen demand for its service “ever-growing” in recent months.

The family fun day will give visitors the chance to go behind the scenes and see what it is like to care for homeless cats who are awaiting their fur-ever homes.

Money raised at the event will go towards helping the steady stream of cats and kittens who are looked after at the centre, such as Mabel. The ninemonth-old kitten was brought in as a young stray, and staff at the centre have worked tirelessly to get her to a place where she trusts humans and is ready to be rehomed.

Beni Benstead, centre manager, said: “Staff and volunteers here help rehome nearly 500 cats every year to new families across the North East.

“Cats come to us for so many reasons, from those that have been found as strays to those who are signed over because their owners cannot afford to keep them.

“While many can be rehomed quickly, increasingly cats are arriving in a terrible state.

“These cats may take many months to get to a place where they are healthy and strong enough to be considered for adoption.

“Vet bills can really mount up when dealing with these unfortunate felines, and we are extremely grateful to our supporters for donating or spending their money at events such as our open day.

“A fun day out can really change the lives of the most needy cats.”

The Cats Protection Summer Fun Day at the Tyneside Adoption Centre will take place on Saturday, August 24 and runs from 11.00am until 3.00pm. There will be craft stalls, a kids’ corner, a cake stand, and raffle prizes.
