United ready for return of Gordon

-

NEWCASTLE United are preparing a warm welcome for Anthony Gordon ahead of pre-season training.

Gordon remains with the England squad in Germany after watching on as an unused substitute during the penalty shoot-out victory over Switzerland in Dusseldorf at Euro 2024.

The £45million man will miss the start of Newcastle’s summer preparations for the 2024/25 season this week but will link up with United after a summer break following on from the Euros.

Gordon has been the subject of intense speculation of interest from Liverpool after he was believed to have been offered in a swap for Jarell Quansah last month. However, the Chronicle has learned that there has been no further enquiries from the Reds for Gordon.

And it is our information that the weekend links with

Manchester City have been dismissed as “untrue” by the Magpies. The plan for Gordon as it stands is for Eddie Howe and the backroom staff to get the England international settled back down into pre-season and then push for a big campaign.

Despite reports over the weekend, Newcastle did not receive an enquiry or approach from Man City for Gordon.

Gordon, 23, could even be drafted into Newcastle’s senior leadership group next season if more experienced campaigners end up leaving St James’ Park. From the board’s point of view, it is understood that Newcastle chiefs are keen to discuss a new contract for Gordon.

His current arrangement ends in 2026 and Howe sees the winger as part of his long-term vision. Liverpool do like Gordon and have kept him on their radar down the years but Newcastle are no longer in a position where they have to sell a player.

Just like the situation surrounding Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, who both attracted interest last month, Gordon would only be sold if Newcastle gained an astronomical offer for his services.

Meanwhile, as United return to Benton later this week, the club will look to get deals done for Ryan Fraser and Northern Ireland international Jamal Lewis.

Fraser was on Southampton’s wish-list while former Norwich City star Lewis has returned to the Magpies after Watford turned down the chance to sign the leftback on a permanent basis.
