Explosive start sees Lambs back on track after rare setbacks

TAMWORTH 3 BLYTH SPARTANS 1 Vanarama National League North

TWO goals in the opening five minutes saw the Lambs ease to a 3-1 win against Blyth Spartans to re-establish a 12 point lead at the top of the Vanarama National League South title.

Andy Peaks made three changes to the side that recorded a goalless draw against Curzon Ashton, looking to return to winning ways after a three game run without a three point haul, as Dan Creaney and Ben Milnes started with Jordan Cullinane-liburd.

Blyth got the game underway but it was The Lambs who had the first chance with just 60 seconds gone when Cullinane-liburd hooked a bouncing ball into the area on target and Mitchell pushed it over the bar for a corner, and from the flagkick the ball came out to Sundire and he whipped it to the far post for Creaney to head home unmarked despite Mitchell’s best efforts.

And four minutes later it was two, when Wreh turned a low ball into the box from Cullinane-liburd past Mitchell to lift the roof on The Lamb once again.

Just 19 minutes in the three points were all but sealed when Sundire threaded the ball through to Wreh who doubled his tally from long range to make it 3-0.

Blyth pulled one back on 39 minutes when a ball drilled into the box from the right evaded everyone and Cook connected at the back of the box to power it past Singh.

That proved to be the end of the scoring as the Lambs secured three points and with Scunthorpe held to a 2-2 draw by Chester, Tamworth saw their lead at the top of the table back to 12 points.

Afterwards manager Andy Peaks paid tribute to his side and their explosive start which paved the way for the win.

“We wanted to be brave, we wanted to be positive and we started with a really positive mindset.

“We set the tone early on, we got the early goals, it set us up well and I thought we were good. At 3-0 up the game’s not over but you’ve done what you want to achieve. Then you get the chance to manage the game, rest some people and give other players some minutes.”
