Youngsters get taste of competition action at Boldmere Invitation meet
ON SATURDAY 18 swimmers from Kingsbury Aquarius Swimming Club headed over to the Ladywood Leisure Centre to take part in the Boldmere Junior Invitation Meet.
This meet is aimed at younger swimmers and includes events for 8 year olds up to 12 year olds. For many of the Kingsbury swimmers this was their first experience of an open meet.
The meet started off with the 100m individual medley, in this event the swimmers complete one length of each stroke. Poppy Parker and Hollie Morris both finished in the top 10 of their age group, with Parker finishing 4th and Morris 8th. Marshall Dawe finished an impressive 6th place in the boys event.
Breaststroke was the next event for the swimmers. The 8 year olds swam 25m (one length) of the pool and the rest of the swimmers swam 50m (two lengths). Franek Rudnicki finished 3rd in the boys 25m event and Horus Hui finished
10th in the 50m event. Parker and Morris again finished in the top 10, with Parker finishing 2nd and Morris 9th.
Before the lunchtime break the swimmers competed in the butterfly races. Parker and
Morris both impressed again finishing 4th and 3rd respectively. One of the teams youngest swimmers, Blake Braddish, picked up a 1st place in the boys butterfly event.
After lunch the event continued with backstroke. Braddish came away with a 2nd place and Oliver Brady finished in 7th place. Parker and Morris continued as they’d swum in the morning, with a 2nd and 7th in the backstroke. Nancy Preece finished in 8th place in the same event. In the boys 50m backstroke, Dawe finished in 4th place.
Freestyle races finished off the day and the swimmers continued to perform. Rudnicki and Braddish finished 3rd and 4th in the 25m event. Parker finished off with an impressive win in the 50m race and Morris ended the day with a 4th place. Preece earned a 10th place finish in the same event.
The boys also swam well, with Jacob Brady finishing 1st in the 50m race, Mikolaj Giemza finishing 4th, Dawe finishing 7th and Hui finishing 9th.
By the end of the day the swimmers had earned 38 personal bests and had taken away a great experience in competitive swimming.
